(ENG) ASH - Action on smoke & Health

Last April, during my vacation in New York, I met Shana Narula, Campaign Coordinator of ASH, Action on Smoking and Health, an American nonprofit very active in the fight against smoking. We discussed how our two organizations can team up to better fight cancer.

LILT Bologna and ASH will from now on collaborate to spread anti-smoking messages and do so by sharing projects and awareness campaigns – also in association with the Framework Convention Alliance, an anti-smoking coalition formed by hundreds of organizations in order to reach more than 100 countries worldwide.

I want to tell you something more about ASH…

ASH is part of the Framework Convention Alliance and bases its activities on the assumption that tobacco is not only a threat to our health, but also to the global economy. The fight against poverty must therefore take on the fight against tobacco.

According to ASH, active since 1967, tobacco use is higher among the world’s poorer population. This is troubling because, driven by addiction, tobacco hijacks a considerable percentage of their income that could be used for food, housing , education, and healthcare - a situation that propagates malnutrition and significantly affects the economies of the world’s poorest countries.

ASH works to spread the WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control , the first major international treaty on public health of the United Nations since 2005, officially ratified by 170 nations . The American nonprofit uses unconventional campaigns, such as experimenting with a new kind of social media network in order to target American teenagers generally reluctant to messages about cancer, heart disease and tobacco.
Through the dating app “Tinder” , ASH conducted an experiment to ask a group of youngsters who they would “swipe right” (or choose to date): a girl shown while smoking or the very same girl (same person, same clothes, same posture) shown not smoking.

Result: the same girl was swiped most when she was photographed not smoking . Message: smoking is unattractive (you can see the video here).
